Text Box: I HAVE BEEN TO PARADISE - 25 oct 2010

It’s unbelievable that it has been nine months since I said goodbye to the busy Johannesburg life. Magaliesburg has been an amazing experience for me, but now it’s time to go home. It gave of itself fully, never running out of more to give. It gave even better sunshine everyday, full moon outside my window, frogs that do not tire to sing their never ending songs.

Since I have been here the question that I have been asked the most is why did I do it? Why did I decide to leave my job, to leave my car, my house, my friends etc, and choose to live in a Retreat Centre. A lot of people do not even take time to go on retreat for a weekend, yet I took nine months, why? I answer that the reasons for me to do it are too many. If I had to go through all of them it would have to be a book. Yet there is one I shall discuss here. It is not the main reason, it is merely one that I have chosen for now.

I moved to the Retreat Centre in order to spend time with myself. My entire life I had followed rules. I followed society’s measure of success, which is: Get good grades at school, get a degree, get married, get a job, get a car, etc. All these things are supposed to guarantee a happily ever after. Nobody tells you that the more you accumulate, the more you get into debt and then you are caught in the system, cant’ get out because you have to service the lifestyle you have created. If you have clothing accounts to pay, house bond, car finance, etc, how do you expect that you can have time out for yourself?

After my marriage broke down my life got tangled. I felt I didn’t know who I was anymore. I didn’t know what my likes and dislikes are. I had allowed society to dictate to me how to live my life, and then allowed society to put its own standard of success on me, which is unattainable for a lot of people and therefore causes suffering. I decided I should give myself time to reassess and make my own decisions. Decide what my likes are and decide what success means to me, and what I want to do with my life. The decision to leave everything behind was not easy; it took all I had to build up the courage to do it. The questions led me deep inside myself to places that I never knew I had. It was like discovering a whole new person and uncovering a new life. When you touch the core of your being, it truly feels like paradise.

The connotation that I have been inside myself sounds foreign to a lot of people because we are so busy trying to be what we think we should be. We are busy trying to make society happy therefore forget to get in touch with ourselves and in touch with who we truly are. At work we stress ourselves to the brink of illness trying to prove to everyone that we are ambitious. Then we get home; sit in front of the TV because we are programmed to do so, irrespective of what is playing we sit and passively watch it. We watch also because whatever is on is going to be the topic of discussion tomorrow so we have to show we are up to date. We therefore forget to be with ourselves and forget to appreciate the important things in ours lives. When last have you had a family conversation which was only that? Not one that takes place when the TV goes onto commercial for a minute, then like the conversation never happened get hooked in watching again.

Yes society does teach us a lot of useful things in many instances, but we need to elevate ourselves and become something more than the ordinary. Let us learn from people who refused to conform to society’s rules. Bill Gates, the richest man in the world today, dropped out of University and decided to follow his own dream. Left the promise of what a degree is supposed to give you and started running a business from his garage. Jennifer Lopes and her sister were equally talented with regards to acting and academics. Against her family’s wishes she pursued acting which was not seen as a career with a steady income. Her sister was an apple of their parents’ eyes because she chose to become a Chartered Account. Today Jennifer is a multimillionaire and employs her CA sister to do her books.

It is okay to do as society wishes, yet always remember that you can do more. You can have a better quality of life by doing what you like, only if you take the time to find out what that is. Become your own best friend. Its not easy but it is doable. Take a few minutes everyday to be with yourself, asking yourself how you feel and what you can do to make this day special for you. As little as five minutes will do the trick. Find a place that is quiet, even in the bathroom. Then do what your soul longs for. Even if it is taking yourself out for a cup of coffee, if that’s what you need, do it, it will improve your quality of life drastically. In whatever you decide to do, I wish you happiness.

JOURNEY INTO PERSONALITIES                          17-03-2010

Recently I had the pleasure of participating in a Personality Traits Retreat. We discussed the nine personalities as outlined by the Enneagram and each of the participants had an opportunity to say which character they feel they identify with.

The Enneargram personalities are as follows:

The Feelings based Personalities

2 – The Helper

3 – The Achiever

4 – The Individualist

The Thinking based Personalities

5 – The Investigator

6 – The Loyalist

7 – The Enthusiast

The Instinctive Personalities

8 – The Challenger

9 – The Peacemaker

1 – The Reformer

A few years ago I attended a Pyramid scheme presentation, which also included a discussion on Personality Traits. The Presenter called himself a motivational speaker and said his aim was to change the way people think and get them to be ambitious and become go-getters. He started his presentation by introducing personality types, which were about six and very similar to the Enneagram. He asked each of us to tell the group which we identified ourselves with.

I was astonished by difference between the people in the Corporate world and the ones who consider themselves to be Spiritual beings. I remember in that presentation I identified with a Service person, which was somebody who believes they are here to help others. Most of the group members identified with the Challenger, people who believe in asserting themselves and maintaining control. Believe me when I say I got the LOOK from the other participants. Everyone looked at me for my lack of being ambitious. I was even asked by someone how can I go through life hoping that all I’ll ever be is a helper for someone else.

The difference with this spiritual group on the Retreat though was that the people who were supposedly Challengers didn’t want to accept those traits because they represent people who are lacking in their spirituality. In the Corporate group, everyone strived to become a Challenger. I found it was difficult for spiritual people to even imagine themselves being controlled by instinct. I was envied for being the helper because it kind of symbolised a level of spiritual attainment if I can use that word.

My view is it doesn’t matter what personality type you are. You were born with and you did not choose; you were born with it imprinted on you. What matters is that you have to understand it, understand both its strong and weak points. Learn to limit the weak points while working on increasing your strengths. It’s exactly what all the great masters say: KNOW THYSELF and the sky is the limit.

JOURNEY INTO HAPPINESS   - 27 April 2009

I hope you had a wonderful Easter. I had quite an eventful day on 22nd April. First I went to vote with the ex-husband (yes we are friends now and no we are not getting back together. That’s a discussion for another day. I came back home to find my place had been broken into. The thieves went through the window, forced burglar bars out with some sort of tool. I don’t think they even spent five minutes in the house. They took things that were lying in the open and easy to carry like Laptop, Digital Camera, Perfumes, Jewelry, etc.

I was very disappointed and needed an explanation at that moment. I went through a stage of blaming myself about what I should have done and what I shouldn’t have done. In my moment of craziness I also came up with the plan that since they took my yoga bag and only the people in my class have it, I’ll find whoever else that has the bag and force
them to explain where the stuff is. I literally burst out laughing at this idea. How silly of me to think that only eleven bags were made and they were all in my class.

This then got me thinking that there is a blessing in every experience. Yes it might have been my karma, or maybe God is testing me or maybe these are part of the lessons that I chose to go through. What matters is what I take out of the experience. I had to remind myself that worldly possessions are not part of who I am. They just help me to get through life.

I was amazed that some of my Angel oils were also taken. I consider this to be one of the blessings that came out of this. It is unlikely that I would have stopped people on the road and offered oils to them, yet because of this someone out there is going to receive Angel
support. I hope I will be able to notice more blessings from this situation.

Out of this situation, I was reminded that we should not be lost in the illusion of getting attached to material possessions. This was such a coincidence because a week ago I was talking to a friend about getting rid of most of the possessions I have accumulated that I do not need. Not getting attached to possessions means that you take whatever you have as something that God has borrowed to you. Therefore should something like that be taken from you, you have lost nothing because it was never yours to start off with.

I had to get out of my self-pity so I decided to give away what I don’t need to Domestic workers in my street (thank you Angel buddies for your charity contributions). The smiles of the people who received these old clothes made me realize that no matter how many possessions can be taken from me, I still have a lot to offer the World.

Right now I feel very happy and fulfilled. What then is HAPPINESS? It is accepting things as they are and being content with everything in the present. This does not mean you stop being ambitious and stop believing you can achieve greater things. It simply means you take time to stop and enjoy what is, you stop to smell the roses, you stop to appreciate a breath of fresh air in the early hours of the morning, you stop to look up at the stars, you appreciate a smile and LOVE what is UNCONDITIONALLY.
You don’t go searching for Happiness, it finds you. Once you have learnt to accept everything as is, you will have a feeling of knowing that the universe is unfolding exactly as it should. And if you still have a feeling of loving everything unconditionally, you know Happiness has found you.
I am thankful to all my Angel buddies, my yoga buddies, family and friends for all your support. I am also grateful to all South Africans for awarding us experiences in which to rediscover ourselves. Without going through such experiences how will we know how much love we have to offer? I therefore send each and every one of you unconditional Love. Mccwaaaa!!

May you embrace all life lessons and accept the present as a gift.

The Divine in me Honours the Divine in You!!
